I worked with the Sky News team to incorporate 'scrollytelling' in their articles for the first time. This refers to a story telling format that changes as the user scrolls.
By leveraging Flourish, the teams existing data visualisation solution, and Scrollama I was able to develop a resuable solution that allows the editorial team to combine visualisations with text components. The Intersection Observer API, a fairly new browser feature, enables detection of an element's visibility within the current viewport. This is used to update the visualisation so that it corresponds with the text component currently visible to the user.
Sky News' first use of scrollytelling was for an article on The state of Vaccinations, which explains how lives could be saved by wider vaccination availability.
