With the World Cup now in full swing, I've just completed a project to add Push Notifications to the Evening Standard website.
Users can opt-in to receive the notifications, which will include the latest news and match updates throughout the tournament.
Whilst it is commonplace to see native apps offering this functionality, the ability to do this from the web is fairly fledgling technology. This functionality requires web browsers to support both service workers and the Push API. This means it is available in the latest versions of Chrome, Firefox and Edge. There is currently no support in Safari.
To deliver the messages I've made use of Firebase's Cloud Messaging infrastructure.
You can opt in to receive the notifications here.
